Play Therapy
What is play therapy?
Play is a child’s most natural form of expression, so play therapy is a therapeutic approach done in a child’s language. Play therapy is a pretty large umbrella in terms of actual techniques and interventions, and it is tailored to the client in the same way other approaches are tailored to meet the needs of adults. Under that umbrella, I most often use art, sand tray, games, and anywhere a child’s imagination needs to go.
Why play therapy?
In short, children have a limited vocabulary and ability to express themselves through words. However, children are very expressive in their own ways. Play therapy is about meeting and communicating with a child in a way that feels most comfortable for them. Rather than expect the child to communicate in an adult manner, play therapy approaches allow them to receive care in their own language. Plus, sitting and talking for long periods of time just doesn’t seem natural for kids.
What ages are appropriate for play therapy?
My immediate answer is that all of my clients, regardless of age, may be a fit for play therapy. I work with people ages 6 and above, and the therapy looks different depending on the age of the client. A 13 year old may not want to engage in the same activity as a 7 year old. I have had clients in their 80s to enjoy and benefit from some of these activities. The key is to always allow the client choices about what we do in sessions because that always leads to us remaining productive in the healing process.
